Gentilini "Rhombus" Robola of Kefalonia '21

Kefalonia (Cephalonia), a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, west of mainland Greece, is a far-flung, captivating place where delicious and complex wines are being made. With a population of around 40,000, the island relies on tourism and agriculture, and Gentilini is one of the wine producers to know here. The Cosmetatos family, with ties to the Italian Marino Gentilini, an Italian who arrived on the island in the late 16th century, marrying and settling here permanently. Spiro-Nicholas Cosmetatos, a descendant of the Gentilini family, studied winemaking in South Africa and returned to Kefalonia to produce wines in Greece. In 2002, Spiros’s daughter Marianna and her husband, Petros Markantonatos, took over the estate.

The grapes for “Rhombus” are from vineyards on the slopes and valley of Mount Ainos, within the Robola of Kefalonia PDO, and the highest mountain on the island. It’s made solely from Robola, a rare variety indigenous to the island. The grape must is fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel for four weeks, followed by four weeks of lee stirring (bâtonnage) for added complexity before bottling.

The 2021 Rhombus offers beautiful citrus and mineral notes on the nose and palate. Pair it with shellfish, grilled fish with herbs and olives, or dishes featuring tomatoes, peppers, and salty white cheeses.
